You guys are fantastic Graham and Caroline! Thank you so much for everything you have done to support your teams.

Kia Ora whanau. It's been a hard journey this time round but the effort is always positive and very worthwhile. Kia Ora to Caroline for keeping this page up to date each week with up to date, positive and motivational support for all competitors especially the two hapu mamas. so congratulations team, you managed to get six non-smokers across the finish line. Don't give up, we'll be here to support you throuh-out the christmas break. Give us a call anytime.....Kia kaha...Graham

caroline.snowden's picture

Well team its not over yet as said yesterday at the BBQ we will be visiting you every Tues/Weds to catch up and smokealyse those of you still keen to be supported over the hols.  See you then

caroline.snowden's picture

Big mihi to all of the team, even though we didnt win any major prizes with WERO this time around, be proud of yourselves for initiating the desire to give up. Its not all about winning prizes for us, its about the journey in going through this process. We are extremely proud of you all regardless of the outcome, I believe the whakawhanaungatanga between the team members is one of the best things that Graham and I enjoy, so thank you all for the opportunity to be a part of your lives at this time. Also thankyou to the WERO team Marewa, Warren and co, thankyou for all of your support, much appreciated and this competition is a novel way of tackling smoking cessation. Also thanks to Dilmah from the team for the green tea samples- not everyone keen on green tea but they prepared to give it a go, and fortunately for me those not wanting to try it have given theirs to me, very nice and thank you.

caroline.snowden's picture

Fantastic day today, our BBQ was awesome. Many thanks to Te Hauora o te Hiku o te Ika for sponsoring our Sossies, icecream, lollies, bread, butter & sauce for our lunch. And everyone for bringing something to supplement our lunch.  Mean salads Rose, and of course Graham with his creamed sponge cakes- he top of the pops for the sponges- even give Maureen a run for her money?? ha ha. Biggest prize winner today was Ian with the WERO cap and the Hig Viz T Shirt (hiku sponsors), Boyce - WERO tea towel, Rose- white diamonds perfum (sponsor G & C), Jay - $20 PKS voucher (sponsor Hiku), Moana - She perfume (sponsor G & C), Koti & La - gift packs for mum & baby (sponsor G & C, Scoob), kids gifts - bracelets, water bombs (sponsor G & C). Unfortunately Gerald and whanau, Eric & Hine unable to be there.  Guests Scoob, Mrs Tep, Lisa nd Glen and children- thankyou for coming along and suporting our team.  Just reiterate our korero today in that Graham nd I will be supporting those in the team who need tautoko over the holiday period, we will be smokealysing every week and be available for cessation support, products etc- patches , gum, or whatever is required.  We are well aware that people get very nervous when they are left on their own after the competition finishes and unfortunatly are very susceptible to relapsing, so we are determined not to allow that to happen. Ian, Rose nd Boyce, Jay, Koti, La we will be continuing to visit and support you all.  Moana if you keen we will also follow up with you. We have had a query from another person from our sister team to possibly support her and her husband over the holiday period too, so we are happy to do that too.  Remember people you are all our whanau and we are passionate about smoking cessation especially for your children if not for your own health benefits.  Kia Kaha koutou katoa.

Warren Moetara's picture

A big mihi to the Whatuwhiwhi crew for the awesome effort - first time for some at WERO, second time for others - whichever it was I'm sure there have been some valuable things learnt along the way about what does and doesn't work for you in your auahi kore journey.  Enjoy the bbq today, and a special mihi to Caroline and Graham for your mahi.  Mauri ora e hoa ma.............

tu meke whanau o Whatuwhiwhi Hub Club uz are all winners in my eyes, mean tautoko kaimahi Caroline & Gee...Love all the comments too Caroline...

caroline.snowden's picture

End of WERO barbecue this Sunday people, hopefully we can all get together for this and celebrate our achievements.

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora whanau.  Couple of relapses this week bringing our team non smokers back to 6. Unforntunately this is how it goes, but what more can I say but keep on trying. Great work Ian, Rose nd Boyce, Koti and La and Jay- you are all doing extremely well. Slipped up again for Moana girl and Gerald, and Eric nd Hine struggling big time. Eric and Hine - I think you are needing to get yourselves sorted out other wise you are wasting your time if you arent going to try and do something. Your korero doesnt match your actions. However you can rely on Graham nd I to support you no matter what, but we want to be able to feel like we are achieving some good in helping you  to help yourselves. God bless.

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora whanau, Jay is our winner this week: Prize : Haititaimarangai kids t shirt, WERO cap, $20 PKS voucher- CONGRATS you deserve it for being quite consistent over the past 3 weeks.

caroline.snowden's picture

Everyone else doing fabulously, Hine and Eric still straggling behind.  Celebration on whanau-cool as !!

caroline.snowden's picture

Dr Marewa Glover's picture

Ha ha dog collar? You mean dog lead don't you? If people have an iPhone, they can download free from the App Store the WERO app and at least keep up with who's in front and use the Stub it Out game. It's great that WERO still works for people who are not using the online side of it. Great work Caroline!

caroline.snowden's picture

Koti you are our winner this week of the Haititaimarangai kids t shirt, WERO cap, girls hat, $20 PKS voucher.Ian you have won the WERO dog collar this week.Congratulations to you both for your well deserved efforts.

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora whanau. A very consistent week, we have four of you struggling- Hine and Eric please dont give up, I know its difficult  but keep plodding on- make a change somewhere in your daily routine- things will only change if you make it happen. Will update Gerald and Moana girl today. Awesome work Boyce and Rosina- you two are making it happen. Koti and La great work. Ian - fantastic as per usual and Jay - you are getting it on now arent you- good on you. Chrissy- you too are doing well and maintaining consistency but there again to improve on your urge to smoke while at home- changes need to be made- challenge yourself.

caroline.snowden's picture

kia ora Marewa, unfortunately 50% our participants dont have access to a computer and the others are aware of web participation but are'nt using it. Would be great with photo's but I really havent had time to chase that up with people but its something I will get on to for the next time. I sent a lot of texts to the team, everyone has access to a mobile phone so thats handy.

Dr Marewa Glover's picture

Any chance of some photos Caroline? Or were they there and they've disappeared? Don't forget the web participation prize of $500!

caroline.snowden's picture

La and Koti -keep up the good work. I know you are both struggling to maintain your non smoking status but you will see the benefits in the long run so I encourage you  both to stick with it, you are doing so well. The rest of you know what you have to do, just try that little bit extra to and make an extra effort.  All the best for the week whanau. Ian of course maintaining the example for the rest ot follow.

caroline.snowden's picture

Tena koutou e te whanau. Firstly what a beautiful labour weekend had by all, we had awesome events in the community with the fun run/walk for tamariki and adults-primo whanau day.  Also our market day on Sunday morning followed by the Karikari fishing prizegiving in the afternoon - due to the weather I am sure we had a wonderful turnout and everybody went home with a bargain or a good feed of fish.  The kids had a ball with the tuatua comp and the activities on the day so congrats whanau on a great whanau weekend in the Whatuwhiwhi community.

caroline.snowden's picture

6 members updated tonight, the rest to  be done in morning.

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora  whanau, the days have been absolutely beautiful here in the far north, what exeptional weather we are having.  I look forward to an awesome summer holiday.  In the meantime people on we  go as we journey to a smokefree world, blessings to you all throughout. Well we have had a bit of a slip up this week with one of our members falling off his waka although not by much so we back to 5 non smokers- take heart team just keep on trying.  Big ups to Boyce this week, you have grown immensely in your walk in the past two weeks and I am impressed with your korero and thanks to your daughter in law-Chrissy she has stirred you up lots about smoking- keep it up Chrissy. Boyce this week you have won the prize pack including: Kids t shirt, Wero cap, $20 pak n save voucher and the special fake $100 note (with cool message attached). Rosina - wow your determination is shining through again and the exercise routine you are following is truly inspiring so you two go for it. Ian our golden boy keep it up.  Our two hapunga mums congrats to you both you are doing very well, look after those children of yours by keeping yourselves smokefree-good on you both. Jay get back up on the waka and Moana girl you need to pick your game up, as for you Gerald will you please use that mist spray you have and sort yourself out. Hine and Eric well if nothing else you are good laugh so until you get it into your heads about what you need to do you will continue to struggle but rest assured we will be right beside you  both. Chrissy- sorry we forgot to come and smokealyse you this week but we will do that this weekend. Whataz has a big weekend this Labour Weekend with the fun run/walk on Saturday on the beach, market day on Sunday morning and of course our annual fishing competition which winds up on Sunday afternoon with the big prizegiving at the hall on Sunday afternoon.  So we look forward to a fun filled weekend with plenty going on to keep us all busy, see you all there. God Bless.

Dr Marewa Glover's picture

Cool. More goodies coming for everyone as we can get them.

caroline.snowden's picture

Awesome news- Rosina just completed 23km bike ride with clean lungs as she puts it- very inspirational Rose- you go girl !

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora team as per Marewa's post below you will all be receiving the Healthy food guide, Wero notepad, lozenges and mints.  The prizes listed in my previous post will be adjusted accordingly.  Sorry for any confusion caused and have a cool smokefree day/week/weeks.... Mauri ora.

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora Marewa, my apologies I think the mix up regarding the resources to be passed on have been my mistake so sorry about that, I shall correct it immediately and thankyou for clearing that up for me.

Dr Marewa Glover's picture

Kia ora Caroline. You're going great guns there. I just want to check that you know the NZ Healthy Food Guide magazine people donated 700 copies of the latest issue - one for each WERO team member. These are to be passed on to every member regardless of where they are at in the competition. They are not a 'spot prize'. The information in the magazine can help with concerns about craving for food, eating more than usual and putting on weight. So, please pass the magazines on as soon as practical for you all. Kia ora!

p.s. the team pack we sent out at the beginning of the competition also had gifts for each team member: lozenges x 3 cards, a WERO To Do List and mints that were to be passed on to each member there and then to help them with quitting. Let me know if there's been a lack of clear communication around that in case I need to get a message out to each coach about the resources. Thanks.

caroline.snowden's picture

Tena koutou e te whanau, things are improving for the team altho we have had a small setback this week with Gerald slipping back, but no worries we are only just revving up now. Great to see you back on the waka Rosina and Boyce- you guys have been really struggling with all sorts going on, kia kaha. You two have been constantly  verbalising your desire to give up smoking and you are getting closer and closer to doing it, you have gone from the first part of the week to smoking yourselves silly to drastically cutting it right off, so i congratulate you two and pray you continue well on your smokefree journey.  As I said to you both Graham and I are not there to judge you, we can only offer as much support as you require but in the end it is up to you totally to stop putting a smoke in your mouth. Our two hapunga mama's Koti and La, congratulations to you both. I know your struggling too, its so hard but you are both doing yourselves and your children proud so keep it up. Welcome back Jay, you too are really having to dig deep to get it into your head about quitting but you are proving you can do it, your children and Polly I know are right behind you so you go hard. Ian as always you are right up there so dont stall you and keep encouraging Boyce and Rose. Moana girl you are nearly there, you are such a young girl the sooner you drop this bad habit the better for your future outlook, your mum, dad and sister are setting the bar  at present- naturally you will follow Im sure. Well our veterans Eric and Hine- you two pulled it out of the bag before and you can do it again - up to you totally. Well people more good news there are weekly prizes up for grabs, eligibility criteria is you have to be smoke free of course so these are the prizes from next week until the end. Four prize packs of :   Kids t-shirt (Haititai Marangai), WERO cap, health food book, notepad, lozenges, pen, mints, fake $100 note (with cool message printed on it) and a $20 pak n save voucher.  Another prize consists of : A quick mist spray, health food book, lozenges, pen, mints and fake $100 note (with cool message) .  Another prize pack of : WERO tea towel, healthy food book, notepad, lozenges, pen, mints, fake $100 note (with cool message).Further prize pack : Dog leash, health food book, lozenges, pen, mints, fake $100 note (with cool message)final prize of :  Hauora High Viz bike shirt (adults), WERO cap, WERO bag, $20 pak n save voucher, healthy food book, notepad, lozenges, pen, mints, fake $100 note (with cool message). So all the best whanau do your best thats all anyone can ask. Oh and Chrissy, even though you not in this team you have come back from last WERO team needing support and Graham and I are very happy to include in your efforts to continue further in your quit smoking plan.

caroline.snowden's picture

to update the remaining three tonight or tommorrow morning.

Warren Moetara's picture

Kia kaha mai ra Whatuwhiwhi - almost halfway there....is this where the big guns come out for the 2nd half of the race?!  Mauri ora...........

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora everyone an improvement this week from last week so congratulations.  Koti and La our two mama's in the hapunga group congratulations on your achievement once again this week as non smokers. Ian great to see you are  on track again and sticking with it-good on you. Gerald very impressed with your attitude and good to know the mist spray is really working for you, we are endeavouring to find another one for you, hopefully one of the previous WERO members may have an unused one left- we will find out.  I can see everyone is finding things very difficult registering above 10 at present.  Unfortunately Graham and I can only support you with what we have but we cant give you the mindset to stop, that has to come from yourselves. HOpefully some of the printed out information Graham has provided you all with will help, something amongst the "Quit smoking tips Sheet" may trigger something in your mind to make you think harder about not taking that smoke you are thinking about right now. All the best for the week team, do what you can to help yourself, do anything to delay that first smoke for the day, try and smoke one less per day everyday, anything is better than trying nothing.

KyleVan's picture

smoking does cost a fortune these days, but not as much as we were calculating - sorry about that, here's a more accurate approximate amount you as a team have saved so far $566 since the start of the competition! Great job!

caroline.snowden's picture

Graham caught up with Polly but not Jay, but Polly said Jay had smoke this morning- come on Jay

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora team, so sorry I have not been posting any comments, unfortunately I have been super busy and time is running away.  Our success rate is quite dismal at the moment but I can only encourage you all to keep on trying. Ian has been doing very well over the past two weeks so great going Ian and Gerald has his first time on the waka as a non smoker for the week so big CONGRATS to you and keep it up.  Just want to encourage Hine and Eric and Boyce and Rosina - I'm sure you must be thinking why you cant seem to break this habit but the more times you think about giving up- you will find that one of these days its going to happen for you. Remember how well you did last time and use that as leverage for yourself, you know you can do it!! Moana and Kotiro - you are young women with bright futures Kia Kaha to you both.

caroline.snowden's picture

Welcome to posting Jay, good on you and congrats to you and Boyce for your decision today- Love it !
Great challenge for yourselves and the rest of the waka.

caroline.snowden's picture

Jay and Boyce arrived today for the meeting - thankyou, Hine called in and Rose gone for swim at Puna (cool one). The rest of you Graham will visit you on Tuesday algud :). So guys, the meeting discussed tactics and a decision with the two team members here was that they are going to be smokealysed to get a reading and record last smoke had too, its about being honest with yourselves and deciding that your aim is to quit! So team what this means is that if you are smokealysed and you come under 7, but you have had a smoke within the last 24 hours then you are a SMOKER. I will post all results on Tuesday. Hmm think on that, Kia kaha.

our wakas away just need every1 on our whataz hub club waka 2 start paddling kia kaha whanau

grahams's picture

Kia Ora Whatuwhiwhi Hub Club, a good start to the competition with 4 members being validated as quit. Kia Kaha whanau the journey has only just begun

caroline.snowden's picture

Great start team. Jay started the ball rolling as our first non smoker on this waka, with Ian also following suit. Our youngest member Moana has done well too along with her sister Koti (Zoe). Koti is our preggy mama, good on you, great effort, definitely cheering for you :) :). Good example you two have set for your mum & dad- come on parents, better catch up. Sorry La the one time I did manage to catch up to you we did not have the smokealyser and even then I forgot to check with you about your smoking habits in last week, my bad! The remaining team members lets get it on and pull those numbers down, Kia Kaha Koutou Katoa. ;) ;)

caroline.snowden's picture

First on the board for our waka is Jay, well done to you. Big mihi to the team out front, Ahikiwi, with 10 non smokers, wow very impressive and an excellent example to lead us on from here. Also mihi to our sister team Karikari Educare, we look forward to a keeping up to date with your progress too, doing well, good on you all.
Our team we will have you all updated by tomorrow hopefully and I will post results. Mauri ora.

caroline.snowden's picture

Kia ora Whatuwhiwhi hub club and all the other teams entered in this competition greetings to you all. This is an awesome opportunity for groups of people to come together in a combined effort to stop smoking, the camaraderie formed in the last WERO competition was awesome, so we expect the same this time around too. I look forward to our meetings and get together's, I expect you all to be true to yourselves in your endeavour to quit smoking because unless you internalise your need to give it up it will remain a struggle. However that is what I am here for as your coach and I will be setting some challenges with you all as individuals and as a group. So get thinking people, ultimately you hold the power within yourself so dig deep and find out what you yourself really want and how to get it? Smoke free is the aim, so lets walk the talk ! and do for yourself and your families. Health is yours for longer in your life if you want it, but you must make the lifestyle changes, not smoking is one of those challenges you can rise to, Kia Kaha
whanau !

Yeah haa Whatuwhiwhi Hub Club kia kaha whanau on the journey mean maori mean......
